Support staff positions have a wide range, varying from trades and maintenance workers to bus drivers, teacher assistants, clerical, and more. Listed below, you will find a summary of the main Support Staff positions at School District No. 83. In addition to specified educational requirements listed below, each position requires the completion of Grade 12 and a clear criminal record check.
Certified Education Assistants work with teachers to support students with diverse learning challenges, and special needs by assisting with behaviour management, curriculum implementation, social skills development, personal care and physical assistance. To be considered for this position, you must possess an Education Assistant Certificate.
Indigenous Education Workers provide social, emotional and academic support and guidance to our Indigenous students in a school setting. 6 months’ post secondary in human or social services or equivalent is required, as well as Cultural awareness of our Indigenous community.
Strong Start Facilitators Oversees the day-to-day operations for the StrongStart BC program and ensures that the goals and objectives of the program are met. They are
responsible for creating and facilitating a program environment where parents and
caregivers participate alongside their children in an interactive, play based setting. A diploma in Early Childhood Education including a Community Care Facility – Branch B.C. license to practice and a valid Child Safe First Aid Certificate are required for this position.
Educational Support Workers act as a support person for identified students by providing social-emotional, behavioural, and academic support to students in the district’s alternate programs. To be considered for this position, you must have completed two years’ of University training in the areas of Social Sciences, Psychology or equivalent.
School Bus Drivers are responsible for operating District school buses, transporting students to and from school and ensuring the bus is maintained and operated in a safe and hygienic condition. A valid B.C. Class 2 Driver’s License with air endorsement is required for this position, as well as knowledge of highway and school bus regulations.
Clerical Staff provide clerical and general office assistance to support the functioning of the school and/or district programs. Positions range from Library Clerks, Career Clerks, Secretary In-Charge, and more. Completion of a certificate/diploma in the area of business administration or equivalent is required, as well as a basic understanding of accounting and bookkeeping.
School Custodians clean and maintain the upkeep and safety of schools and district facilities. Custodians perform routine cleaning including vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, waxing hallways burnishing or polishing floors and stairways, dusting and wiping furniture, disinfecting washrooms, desks, kitchen areas and replenishing supplies. A Building Service Worker Certificate is required for this position.
Computer technicians are responsible for the maintenance and technological support of school district information systems and require the completion of a two year diploma in Computer Technology.
Maintenance and Trade Workers assist the District with anything from minor repairs to major renovations of school district facilities. Positions include Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, Gas fitters, HVAC, Horticulturists, Painters, Mechanics and other trades. A Certificate of Proficiency is required.
